Kombucha is a beverage that is made from sweetened black or green tea and has been fermented through a process using yeast (like beer) and bacteria (like yogurt). Because it is fermented, kombucha may contain tiny traces of alcohol (around .5%). Kombucha is a great alternative to sugary sodas, because it is a naturally fizzy beverage. The sugar in Kombucha is largely consumed by the bacteria during the fermentation process, which leaves you with a healthy, fizzy, and low sugar beverage.
Kombucha is known as the “elixir of life” because it is so good for your health. Some of the health benefits are: aids in digestion by its rich probiotics, enhances liver function by its high glucaric acid content, aids in nutrient assimilation by creating a healthy gut, boosts the immune system by its high antioxidant levels, ease joint pain with its natural glucosamine content. Other noted benefits of Kombucha: alleviates chronic constipation, improves mood/depression, boosts energy, reduces allergies, reduces insomnia, and prevents gout and stomach ulcers.
Kombucha tastes delicious and it is wonderful for your health! No wonder it has become so popular.
The down side to drinking Kombucha is the price to purchase it. One 16oz bottle in a grocery store costs between $3-$6. Crazy, right?! Brewing your own Kombucha at home is very, very easy… and inexpensive! Want to learn how to brew your own Kombucha? Check out Kombucha Series Pt. 2!
